ORIGIN OF ENGLISH WORDS / Pôvod anglických slov

  • HAMBURGER – The term hamburger originally derives from Hamburg, from where many people emigrated to America. In the late 18th century, the largest ports in Europe were in Germany. Sailors who had visited the ports of Hamburg, Germany and New York, brought this food and term „Hamburg steak“ into popular usage. To attract German sailors, eating stands along the New York city harbor offered „steak cooked in the Hamburg style“ – See Wikipedia. So, nothing in common with „ham“!
Maybe.
  • SLAVE = otrok. Toto slovo vzniklo z franc. esclave. Prapôvod má v tom, že v dôsledky vojen Otta Veľkého bolo veľa Slovanov (Slavs) predaných do otroctva. Viď TU.
  • SPA = this acronym stands for Sanum Per Aqua (Latin: Health Through Water)
